- AI Storyteller. RimWorld is not designed as a competitive strategy game, but as a story generator. It’s not about winning and losing, it’s about the drama, tragedy, and comedy that happens in your colony. The game creates events like pirate raids, traders, and storms. But these events aren’t random. RimWorld uses an AI storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) that analyzes the situation and decides which event it thinks will make the best story. You can choose between three storytellers: the thoughtful Cassandra Classic, the more thoughtful, build-focused Phoebe Quiet, and the wildly unpredictable Randy Random.
- A Motley Crew. In RimWorld, colonists are not professional settlers - they are survivors of a passenger liner disaster. They can be accountants, housewives, journalists, cooks, aristocrats, street kids, soldiers. An aristocrat will be strong in social skills (for recruiting prisoners and negotiating trade prices), but will refuse to do physical labor. A simpleton from a farm knows how to grow food, but will not be able to do research. A boring scientist will be strong in research, but will be completely incapable of performing social tasks. A genetic killer can do nothing except kill, but does it very well. Each hero has his own personality traits. Neurotic colonists work faster, but are more susceptible to stress and prone to nervous breakdowns. Rude heroes do not get along well with people and spoil the mood of others. Nudists enjoy walking around naked, while cannibals enjoy eating human flesh. You can increase the number of colonists by accepting refugees, capturing prisoners in battle and converting them to your side, buying them from slavers, rescuing them, and accepting immigrants.
- Health Simulation. Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic diseases are tracked for each body part and affect the heroes' abilities. Eye injuries make it difficult to shoot or perform surgery. Leg wounds slow people down. Hands, brains, mouths, hearts, livers, kidneys, stomachs, feet, fingers, toes, and other body parts can be injured, diseased, or lost. All of this leads to logical in-game effects. Each individual has its own body structure. Take away a leg from a deer and it can run on the other three! You can restore body parts with prosthetics, ranging from the primitive to the supernatural. A wooden leg will allow colonist Joe to walk after an accident with a rhinoceros, but he will still be quite slow. Next year, you can buy an expensive bionic leg from a merchant, and Joe will become a super runner. You can even extract, sell, buy, and transplant internal organs. Disease is a serious threat. Open wounds will become infected. Flu and plague can appear anywhere, and tropical rainforests are rife with malaria and encephalitis lethargica. As colonists age, chronic conditions such as cataracts or back pain can develop.
- Seasons and Temperatures. Temperatures are simulated both outdoors and indoors. As the seasons change, the outdoor temperature will rise or fall. Plants only grow at certain temperatures. When it gets cold, it starts to snow. People can get hypothermia or heat stroke. You can control indoor temperatures with heaters and air conditioners for survival, comfort, or to prevent food from rotting. You can even build deadly temperature traps to roast your enemies alive.
- World and habitat creation. The game creates an entire planet from pole to equator. You choose where to land your rescue module: in the cold northern tundra, in the parched desert, in the temperate forest or in the steaming equatorial jungle. Different regions have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, precipitation, mineral resources and terrain. The struggle for survival in a disease-infested, suffocating jungle is very different from the same struggle in the parched desert lands or in the frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.
- Tactical Engine: RimWorld uses an engine originally developed for tactical combat simulators like Jagged Alliance 2. This means it has a lot of features for creating interesting small team battles.
- Tutorial System. This type of game can be difficult to learn. So we created an adaptive tutorial system that watches your actions to see what parts of the game you understand and teaches you the parts you don’t. If you don’t understand how to control something, the game will gently explain and help you. If you already know something, the game won’t bother you. RimWorld also uses a notification system to make sure you don’t miss anything. If you’re low on food or a colonist is about to go berserk, a message will pop up in the corner of the screen letting you know. Now you won’t get wiped out because you missed some minor detail. If you do get wiped out, it’ll be for a good reason.
- Psychology. People in RimWorld constantly study the situation and the surroundings to know how to feel at the moment. They react to hunger and fatigue, to deaths in front of their eyes, to disrespectfully buried corpses, to injuries, to darkness, to being in cramped conditions, to sleeping in the open or in the same room with strangers, and many other situations. You can check the psychology of the hero at any time to know what he is feeling and why. When a colonist is under stress for too long, he may have a "nervous breakdown". Some can't take it anymore and wander the colony for a while. Some leave. Some, like in Dwarf, become psychopaths and go into violent hysterics.
- Universe. RimWorld is a mix of hard science fiction and the Old West. It is a frontier world on the edge of known space, far from the civilized core worlds. The planet is huge and mostly deserted. There are no strong civilizing governments anywhere nearby. You are on your own. The main idea of the RimWorld universe is the diversity of human conditions. In these conditions, humanity spreads across the galaxy with no other means of faster-than-light travel and communication. Given the fact that stellar civilizations decline (due to wars and plagues) as often as they prosper, this means that an interstellar traveler can encounter people of all levels of development: from pre-agricultural tribes to supernatural half-robot demigods. In RimWorld, beginning colonists are at a technological level in the middle of this range. But you can encounter people of much lower and higher levels of development, and acquire and use their tools and weapons. In RimWorld, a single battle can involve bows and arrows, shotguns, automatic rifles, and biomechanical killing machines.
